What is the best Linux software to convert and burn movies?

I use Linux Mint 9 and I've been trying to burn downloaded movies in VCD format. I've managed to burn a DVD with Brasero and I used K3b to burn a VCD but the picture playback was awful, it was showing in the top right quarter of my screen with what seemed to be a menu on the rest of the screen. I've looked at the software settings but to no avail. What software do you suggest for both quality and ease of use?
