Is software purchased for a small business tax deductable?

I'm planning on purchasing some design software at the end of the year. Close to $5k. The plan is to use it to design some projects I have interest in bringing to market and offering design services to people on the side to bring in some income. Is this software tax deductable/ tax write-off? If not, under what circumstances would I be able to deduct the cost of software from my taxes? Is software purchased for a small business tax deductable?Yes. You can take 100% of the cost (subject to certain limitations) under Section 179 if it is for business purposes (must be a venture that is intended to produce taxable income). You also may depreciate the cost over time as an alternative. If it is a "start-up" expense it may have to be amortized. Consult a tax professional for the proper treatment of this item as answers here are limited in scope due to the nature of the forum. Here is a link to the IRS Publication: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p946.pdfIs software purchased for a small business tax deductable?Small software purchases can be expensed, however larger investments such as your are amortized over time.

See the instructions for Form 4562 http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i4562.pdf as well as IRS Pub 946 http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p946.pdf .Is software purchased for a small business tax deductable?if this is something you need to be able to operate your business, yes it would be an expense

however that amount of money would probably be more like an asset you will depreciate or amortize

if you haven't got this business going it would be pre opening expenses which are always amortizedIs software purchased for a small business tax deductable?
You may get a write-off or a tax credit.
