I'm a junior in highschool and I'm thinking about getting a degree in software engineering after graduating highschool. My dear friend, who is also a song writer got a new computer and gave me her old PC which has Sibelius music writing program on it. I have been so happy to finally get my music on paper in a more professional looking and more easily readable form. I really can't say about other programs. But, I really like this one for my needs. I have done lead sheets with melody and chord markings, piano or keyboard and voice, as well as parts. There are many features which I have not yet learned to use, including playing the music as you want it and the program writing it for you. This is a good for people who have piano skill. I am a vocalist with limited keyboard ability, even though I am a trained musician.

Once you get the hang of it, you can learn the shortcuts and go very quickly. I use it on a daily basis, and it took me just a few weeks to get used to all of the shortcuts and be able to use them efficiently.

Finale is the other big name in music notation, but I don't like it personally. Here's the difference: Sibelius is a music/sound based program. It actually reads the music and anticipates what you are doing to an extent. Finale is graphics based and does not playback your work as well, nor does it anticipate moves that well.

A lot of people will tell you that Mac is better for music applications, but all music applications are basically the same on Mac and PC. I've used both Mac and PC extensively and I definitely prefer PC. I think this is really a personal preference for each individual though. No one can really tell you which one to choose. My advice is to find a store that carries both and has displays. Play around on them. You won't have the music notation program more than likely, but you can judge which one you like better with normal everyday applications.

If you want to get Sibelius, shop around. Sibelius 4 hasn't been out that long. You can find it on the Sibelius website, but other websites have it on sale sometimes. I have the Interstate Music catalog, and they are advertising it for $239.98. Check www.interstatemusic.com for it! There are plenty more out there, just search it...What songwriting software would you recommend for a computer novice?Buy a PC and get a copy of Finale. It's been the industry mainstay for years. Sibeleus is an up and comer but Finale still is the best choice and most compatable. Check it out at codamusic.com. They also have smaller programs that you can start with and then upgrade if you don't want to dive in to this powerful program. I've been using it for about 5 years and love it. I do a ton of arranging for my church including SATB, praise band, and full jazz ensemble. Finale handles it with ease.

A sailing friend has night vision equipment that detects 9 - 11 different shades of black instead of using infrared lighting as in the past. Wouldn't this concept be useful in converting B %26amp; W photos to color? you can also do what is called selective coloring or splash coloring with gimp.There are two way`s you can do this The first way is to Put your picture into gimp and then duplicate it by left clicking on the icon that looks like a picture inside another picture next to the one that look`s like a anchor in your layers,chanel box. Make the layer you have just made is highlighted by left clicking on it. Then Desaturate the layer that you have just made and make it B%26amp;W by left clicking on colors and drop down box click on Desaturate. Apply a layer mask to the layer by right clicking on the layer and in the drop down box left click on Add layer mask... make sure that White (full opacity) is selected click on the add Button at the bottom of the drop down box make sure that you are you are on the layer mask box, not on the image itself by clicking on the layer mask box next to the layer you made. Then use the black brush to paint on the layer mask That will bring the color back to those areas. If you make a mistake, change the brush to white and go over it.

The Second way to do what is called selective coloring or splash coloring with gimp.Here`s is how you can have some part`s of a picture B%26amp;W with some part`s color. To make that kind of picture with Gimp. First open gimp put in the picture that you want to make with some color and B%26amp;W. Use the path tool to in-close the part of the picture that you want to be color. The path tool will leave a lot of little dot`s around the part that you want to be color. After you in close the part that you want to be color go to your keyboard and push the Ctrl button to close the path then go to select click on it a drop down box will come up click on from path then go back to select and click on it again in the drop down box click on invert. Then go to color`s click on it and in the drop down box click on Desaturate if you want all the picture to be B%26amp;W and just have that one part color. Or if you want to have some color in the B%26amp;W part and full color in the part you select then click on select and Hue-saturation and in the Hue-saturation box use the

slider button where it say`s saturation to adjust the amount of color that you want in the B%26amp;W part then click on ok at the bottom of the box.If you want two or more part`s to be in color than click on the dot`s that path tool make`s and use the path tool to in-close the other`s part`s that you want to make color but don`t click on the first dot or the last dot that the path tool make`s or it won`t work click on one of the dot`s in-between the first and last dot`s that the path tool make`s. Thanks!What program/software do you use to separate the vocals and the instruments?There are no programs at this time that do a truly great job of it. most of the software that "removes vocals" simply compares the left and right channels out of phase with each other, to eliminate the vocals. This changes the re sound of the rest of the instruments, and only removes the vocals if they are perfectly centered. It can knock their volume down quite a bit, but at the price of sound quality of the rest of the music.

The way karaoke recordings are made is by using the original studio master of the song, then muting the lead vocal(s). This way, the vocals are gone with no effect at all on the rest of the channels, or sound quality. No software at present can accomplish this.

The "sound separators" shown in music and TV programs are fictional. They do NOT really exist. Nor have they ever. I have seen these fictional "separators" in TV shows since the early 70's, but as of today, they are still only fiction.

I believe that we will see the day that they will exist, and work, but that day is not here yet...
